Congella United National Breweries Ltd, Durban
The Congella Brewery in Durban is the “original” house of the Sorghum Brewery in Dundee. Congella is the world’s largest sorghum brewery with a production of seven to nine million litres annually, averaging 250 000-300 000 litres per day. Sorghum is the basis of a very viable, nourishing drink for the mass market. However, it has a relatively low annual turnover of about R200 – R220 million, when considering the volumes produced and sold, as it also suited to the more economical market.
Vice president O. Singh, and Sales Manager H.T Dlamini, invest great time and effort into continually upholding the good image of the brewery. This is done by keeping abreast of change through constantly developing new varieties of beer, through maintaining sales levels and through growing market share. Their efforts towards supporting community-based projects in their business dealings can be commended, as can their willingness to support the Brew Route both financially and from a marketing perspective.
ON OFFER TO VISITORS ON THE BREW ROUTE:
Guided tours are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
The brewery has a small pub for its employees, where snacks and beer tasting can be arranged for the visitors after the tour.
Mr Dlamini is a real specialist in the traditional music of the Greater Durban Area and offers a package which combines the Brew Route in Durban with the local African music scene.
