Two of South Africa’s leading theatre stalwarts, playwright and actor Paul Slabolepszy and director Bobby Heaney, once again team up to create a distinctly South African experience in Slabolepszy’s brand new hit play Suddenly the Storm. Their combined experience and proven track-record bring together the perfect storm of talent with powerful acting, inspired writing and incisive directing.
On the outer reaches of the Far East Rand, at the home of an ageing ex-cop Dwayne (played by Slabolepszy) and his much younger wife Shanell (Charmaine Weir-Smith), a storm is brooding. What starts out as a smouldering dark comedy, suddenly turns into a roller-coaster ride of startling revelations … of rage and recrimination … of intrigue and suspense … before the storm finally breaks. Enter Namhla Gumede (played by Renate Stuurman), born on June 16, 1976 and seeking answers to questions that have remained buried for 40 long years…
A whirlwind of mixed emotions – greed, love, loss and healing, Suddenly the Storm touches on topics that make this country so rich and rewarding for those who can brave its storms.
Written by Paul Slabolepszy, directed by Bobby Heaney, lighting design by Wesley France, set design by Greg King, and cast: Paul Slabolepszy, Charmaine Weir-Smith, Renate Stuurman.
