Adventure is Calling!

WHEN it comes to holiday destinations, KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast – with its Blue Flag Beaches, world-renowned dive sites, hinterland tours and outdoor adventures – is one of the country’s leading attractions.

There are certainly plenty of options for tourists who want to try something new, adventurous and outdoors after their long isolation at home.

Among the unique experiences are the new KwaXolo Caves Adventures and the Red Desert, the world’s smallest desert, as well as established activities like micro-lighting, hiking, biking and nature trails.

Ugu South Coast Tourism has been passing on the latest Covid-19 information via its. Hotels and tourism establishments, like the San Lameer Hotel and Spa, are also prioritising visitor safety while advising tourists about all the local activities.

It was a weekend of firsts for television presenter and Idols judge, Unathi Nkayi, who was a guest of Tourism KwaZulu-Natal to the region.

The call of the wild

The plucky presenter plunged off the edge of the Oribi Gorge (strapped to the Wild 5 Adventures swing of course); abseiled down the mountain at the KwaXolo Caves Adventures, and swung out over at Leopard’s Rock into the nearby UMzimkhulu River Gorge.

If you’re an adrenaline junkie like the daredevil Unathi, the Wild 5 Adventures Park will keep you on your toes (or off them). The 165m swing is the world’s highest gorge swing. There is also a zipline and an 84-metre suspension bridge to negotiate.

Plunging into the past

Hiking down to the KwaXolo Caves trail offers travellers a unique experience: access is via a safety wire.

A hiking route to a nearby waterfall is also available and horse-riding is being introduced.

Leopard’s Rock

Travellers can also make lasting memories as they take pictures at the overhanging Leopard’s Rock-26km from Port Shepstone- while marvelling at the sweeping views over the majestic uMzimkhulu River Gorge.

Fun things to do

Visit South Coast’s golden beaches – five are Blue Flag Beaches – ideal for swimming, snorkelling, surfing and relaxing.

Play golf –  There are 11 courses alongside ocean and coastal forests.

Be adventurous – Wild 5 Adventures’ options include the Wild Gorge Swing, zip-lining, white-water rafting and paintball.

Visit nature reserves and farmlands for trail hiking, running, 4×4 adventures and day visits. One drawcard is the KwaNzimakwe Multi-Trails.

Explore cultural sites- The scenic KwaXolo Caves Adventures contains ancient San artwork while the Ntelezi Msani Heritage Centre showcases local history, cultural and creative activities.

 Let’s go for a ride

If you’re not an adrenaline junkie but still prefer being outdoors, horseback riding is the perfect outdoor activity to try out, and one that is very popular during holiday season.

At the Selsdon Park Estate, you can experience a guided horse-riding tour on the beach. Honestly, there is no better way to start your day than by galloping through the calm beach, enjoying the majestic beauty the ocean offers, while watching the sun rise with friends or loved ones.
