The gun emplacements, one on the north side and one to the south on Lancaster Hill, date to the Anglo-Boer war of 1899 to 1902. Action was seen here on 11 and 12 December 1900 when Gen. Louis Botha attacked the garrison under Col. Gawne. The site was declared a national monument in July 1982.
